SHOWS NEW HOPE FOR SUFFERERS OF
OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

Comfortable Alternative to In-Laboratory Sleep
Studies
SAN
FRANCISCO, Nov. 2, 2001 - Research presented
today at the UCSF Otolaryngology Update Meeting
demonstrates there is new hope for sufferers of
obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The presentation
referenced results of a clinical trial evaluating
technology from Sleep Solutions, Inc., an
unattended and unassisted, physician-prescribed
service for diagnosing OSA in the patient's home.
OSA, the most common type of sleep disordered
breathing, carries significant health risks and
affects an estimated 18 million Americans.
The
study, performed at UCSF/Mt. Zion Sleep Disorders
Center in San Francisco, showed the Sleep
Solutions system to be comparable to in-laboratory
polysomno-graphy (PSG), with a correlation of 96
percent. Sleep disordered breathing patients were
simultaneously tested using the Bedbugg™
system and PSG, the current standard in OSA
diagnosis. The results of the study, "Clinical
Validation of the Bedbugg in Detection of
Obstructive Sleep Apnea," were recently
published in the Journal of Otolaryngology-Head
and Neck Surgery.
"The
documented prevalence of OSA in the general
population clearly makes it desirable to have
effective and accurate home testing options,"
said David Claman, M.D., director, UCSF Sleep
Disorders Center and lead investigator. "The
Bedbugg System is a prospectively validated
technology proven to be clinically accurate and
easy to use by patients in the home environment.
This has potential to provide access to quality
diagnoses for a higher proportion of undiagnosed
sleep apnea patients."
Obstructive
Sleep Apnea is a serious health issue. It is
estimated that only 10-15 percent of the 18
million Americans believed to be affected have
been diagnosed. Research shows that OSA is a
potentially life-threatening disorder that is
associated with high blood pressure, congestive
heart failure, irregular heartbeat, and greater
risk of heart attack or stroke. OSA has also been
linked to diabetes, depression, epilepsy,
headaches, daytime sleepiness and an overall
decreased quality of life. Sleep apnea, with its
subsequent disrupted sleep patterns, has also
been clearly identified as a major cause of
vehicular and industrial accidents, as well as
impaired cognitive performance.
The
Sleep Solutions system is the only device cleared
by the Food & Drug Administration that is
specifically designed for unattended and
unassisted use in the patient's home and
clinically validated event-to-event to in-laboratory
PSG. Using proprietary algorithms, the frequency
of apneas (cessation of breathing) and hypopneas,
(partial airflow) is scored to determine the
severity of OSA. The Sleep Study generates
concise, conclusive data that enables physicians
to make accurate and rapid diagnostic decisions.
"This
diagnostic system has undergone rigorous
comparative testing at two different sleep
laboratories demonstrating its clinical validity
as well as its ability to be used in a patient's
home unattended and unassisted," said Bruce
Adornato, M.D., former director of the Stanford
Sleep Laboratory in San Francisco and Sleep
Solutions' medical director. "I believe this
technology will make it easier for people with
this serious health risk to get tested and
treated."
"The
current standard method for the evaluation of OSA
is an in-laboratory PSG, which is costly and
requires the patient to stay overnight in a sleep
laboratory attached to many wires and sensors.
Now, a physician can order an at-home sleep test
by phone, fax or through Sleep Solutions'
Internet service. The diagnostic system is
shipped directly to the patient's home based on a
doctor's prescription. Instructional materials
walk the patient through a simple set-up process
and after completing three nights of testing, the
patient returns the system for analysis and the
generation of a comprehensive Sleep Study. The
Sleep Solutions diagnostic service is less than
half the cost of the average PSG study and does
not require equipment purchase, maintenance or
staff training.
Central
to the delivery of the Sleep Solutions service is
the MediTrack™ System, an innovative
Internet-enabled database and network
architecture for direct-to-patient residential
delivery of testing services and medical products.
This enables the service to be provided to any
patient, anytime, anywhere - virtually
eliminating geographic and socioeconomic factors
that often reduce access to breakthrough
technology.
